Redefining Workspaces with Urban Farming

Where Sustainable Design Meets Employee Well-Being and Innovation

Urban A&O’s workplace design goes beyond traditional workspaces by integrating urban farming within a London-based recruitment agency’s 115,000 square foot office. With 20% of the space dedicated to hydroponic and soil-based farming, employees are surrounded by fresh plants and air, creating a healthier, more inspiring environment. This innovative design not only enhances the office’s sustainability but also encourages urbanites to rethink agriculture and its potential to rejuvenate both city life and rural communities.

The Green Office

Prototypes for urban/vertical farms have been developed, considering projected urban growth.

The London-based recruitment agency has dedicated 20% of their 115,000 square foot office to growing fresh vegetables.

The gardens utilize a mix of hydroponic and soil-based farming and require very specific climate control within the building.

This often means keeping these spaces warmer than is considered comfortable for office spaces which could become a potential downfall. To combat this, we have segregated the office into zones, by simply rerouting HVAC diffusers based on office programming.

Different kinds of plants are growing in the interior of the office. Not just utilizing fresh plants but vertical farming is a part of the design strategy of the office. The employees’ breaking areas are surrounded by plants that are providing fresh air.

The food grown in the office isn’t meant to just feed the employees. We are hoping that this new type of office will inspire the young urbanites to reconsider agriculture and possibly even reinvigorate rural areas.
