Urban A&O’s approach to smart cities and campuses challenges the notion that technology alone can solve urban problems. Instead, we focus on effective urban design—creating walkable, dense, and socially diverse eco-districts supported by clean energy and efficient public transportation. Our buildings are prefabricated, energy-efficient, and decarbonized, promoting low-tech, sustainable solutions that work harmoniously with nature. By integrating renewable energy and rewilding urban landscapes, we create cities and campuses that are socially, environmentally, and financially sustainable for the long term.
At Urban A&O, we approach master planning with an academically rigorous and innovative mindset, setting new benchmarks in sustainable urban development. This 20-acre green neighborhood in California represents a paradigm shift in community design, merging architectural excellence, ecological responsibility, and advanced construction methodologies to redefine what it means to live sustainably. With over 1,000 planned residents, 700+ housing units, and 100,000 square feet of integrated retail space, the neighborhood is poised to generate 1,000 jobs, serving as an economic, social, and environmental catalyst.
Central to this initiative is our pioneering concept of Neighborhood-As-A-Product. By applying a standardized, scalable approach to neighborhood development, Urban A&O ensures efficiency, replicability, and economic feasibility. This model leverages industrialized construction techniques that not only streamline the building process but also minimize waste and optimize resource allocation. Prefabricated systems and modular design components are seamlessly integrated into the master plan, creating resilient and high-performance structures with a fraction of the environmental impact traditionally associated with large-scale development.
The neighborhood’s design embodies the principles of a circular economy, a cornerstone of Urban A&O’s planning ethos. At the community scale, energy, water, food, and waste systems are interconnected in a regenerative loop, ensuring resources are used, reused, and reintegrated into the system with minimal loss. Advanced material selections, informed by Urban A&O’s extensive expertise in sustainable sourcing, support the neighborhood’s zero-waste goals, while localized renewable energy production and water recycling technologies provide a self-sufficient infrastructure that aligns with long-term environmental objectives. To ensure true circularity, the residential model is rental, a key driver in ensuring circular principles.
Biophilic principles are woven throughout the design, creating an immersive connection between residents and nature. Green roofs, vertical gardens, and ecological corridors are strategically positioned to enhance biodiversity, reduce urban heat, and foster a sense of well-being. Walkability and connectivity further define the master plan, with car-free zones and thoughtfully designed public spaces encouraging active lifestyles and community engagement. These elements work in concert to cultivate a neighborhood that is not only functional but deeply enriching for its inhabitants.
The project exemplifies Urban A&O’s commitment to advancing the field of master planning. It is not merely a development but a case study in the integration of regenerative design, circular economy practices, and cutting-edge construction methods. By combining these elements with our deep understanding of social dynamics and environmental systems, we deliver a blueprint for future communities that balance prosperity, inclusivity, and ecological stewardship. Urban A&O continues to lead as subject matter experts, reshaping the discourse on sustainable urbanization and setting new standards for innovation in the built environment.
